Kate's Birthday Surprise
The eight children enlist help from professional baker Duff Goldman to create a special surprise for their mom Kate's birthday.

It's Kate alone on the interview couch and she's telling us that everything she does is for the kids. And while it looks like it's all about her, she's really doing all of this stuff for her kids. Hmm...I had no idea that she needed to have a tummy tuck to be a better mommy.

Since the marriage is disintegrating, Jon tells us that when Kate's off doing her thing, he's home with the kids, and vice versa. We see Jon feed the kids lunch and offer them some apples. It's finally time for dessert and each of the kids gets to pick out a piece of candy. Joel tries to sneak 2 pieces, but Jon catches on and doesn't let him have 2. Hannah has a mini meltdown and gets upset when she can't have any candy. Jon says strong and doesn't let her have any. Good boy Jon. Way to be a parent. He also said it to her in a very nice voice. Which counts for something with me.

And while Jon's busy raising the kids, Kate's fake being nice to some fans while signing the books that they just bought.

It's Kate's birthday and she doesn't seem happy about it. Jon's not there - he's off in Utah playing vacation with his new girlfriend - so Kate decided to have a party for herself with the kids. She planned to bake herself a cake and celebrate with her kids. Each of the kids did give her a cute homemade card and she seemed to like it.

The kids have been planning a surprise for Kate. Because clearly all 8 of them together have the abilities to do this, but whatever, we're going with it. At some point during the day, Leah wanders into the kitchen and tells Kate that the big bus is there. Kate doesn't seem to believe her and it takes all of the kids to get her to look out of the window to see that there is, indeed, a bus there. Everyone feins ignorance when asked where they are going, but Kate realizes that some sort of surprise is in store. Hmm...what was your first clue?

Since Kate can't go out in regular clothes anymore, she changes into a mini skirt, pink tank top, red leather jacket and hooker heels before she leaves the house. Thankfully the kids were already wearing matchy matchy outfits, so they were ready to go.

After a couple hours on the bus, everyone finally gets out and Kate realizes that they're going to be at Charm City Cakes - from the Food Network. Kate freaked out and seemed really excited to be there. Duff baked Kate a special cake for her birthday and she seemed excited to have it.

The family got the tour around the place and they ended at a table where each kid got a cake to decorate. Kate didn't seem happy about the mess they were making, but each of the kids went to town and just put a TON of frosting on their cakes. Um, gross. But at least the kids were having fun and making a mess.

Clearly Kate could only handle the mess for so long and to let us, the audience know that she couldn't take it anymore, she made some random snorty noises to illustrate how dirty the kids got. Gross. And steller parenting.

After everyone had been cleaned up, the kids sang happy birthday to Kate and she decided that it would be okay to eat a little bit. Oy.

Jon seems to be having fun in Utah. He visited the National Ability Center and was helping some of the kids that had disabilities. It seems like a cool place. Jon seems happy to be helping out. During his volunteer time, he'll be skiing with a kid who has CP and helping him down the mountain. Which is pretty cool. And amazing that they can give this kid something awesome to do, despite his physical disabilities.

SassySarah's Review: It was kind of boring, to be honest. The show's about Kate now, not the kids. And that's boring. One thumb down.
