Jon & Kate Plus 8 - Yard Sale

Realizing how much stuff they've accumulated during the past four years, Jon and Kate decide to clean the house and hold a yard sale.

This episode really exploits all the free stuff they've gotten over the years. And what little regard they have for the generosity of others.

Kate tells us that they have a yard sale every single year but that this year they wanted to donate the proceeds to the Sunshine Fund. Oh really? Every year? Then how come I see baby seats and strollers included?

The night before the sale, we see that the garage is *packed* full of stuff. I mean PACKED. It looks like there is a path between the house entrance and the garage door.

I don't understand why they can't donate the stuff that was donated to them. *That* would be very kind and paying it forward. You could probably make an episode out of that. But the people receiving the gifts probably don't want to be filmed.

Jon explains that a lot of the stuff included in the sale is *memorabilia*. I don't think that a triple stroller is considered memorabilia. Watching Jon load all the stuff into the truck lets us see that some of the stuff seems brand new. But what makes me sad is that Jon got sentimental when talking about the stuff that his Dad either gave them or was around when they used it. He seems down when talking about a golf bag that his Dad gave him. Why not keep it for the boys when they are older? More than likely because Kate told him to get rid of it. In the couch interview, she kind of makes fun of him for being sentimental. Because I think for her, out of sight, out of mind.

The garage sale is being held at a local church. I'm not sure why they can't hold it at their house. It would have been way cheaper and easier to just have it at their house. Oh, right. Kate doesn't want fans gawking.

When they arrive at the church, the tables that were supposed to be there, had not yet arrived. This makes Kate *irritated*. In fact, she was so irritated throughout the day, that it made me not want to hear from her the rest of the episode.

Of course, without tables, they could start getting other stuff ready. Getting the items out of the truck and starting to set up. But Kate doesn't think of this.

When the tables do, in fact, arrive, Kate complains that they are dirty. Has she never heard of soap and water? But thank goodness, she had a roll of paper to cover the tables. Saved!

Kate then flips out because the printer misspelled proceeds as "prodceeds" on the signs. Does she not realize that they may have spelled it according to how they were told. Carla saves the day and puts stickers over the *D*. Carla and Jon are clearly working their asses off trying to get everything unloaded, while Kate paces around waiting for them to finish unloading.

Jon goes home to pick up the kids. How come they couldn't stay home the entire day? Kate wanted the kids to be there to experience the giving. Let's face it...they could care less and at 4 years old...they don't get it.

At 8am, there wasn't a whole flood of people. Which *irritates* Kate. Wake up, Kate. Not everyone in PA is hammering to meet you and buy your donated crap. She doesn't want to take this stuff back home. Or, heaven forbid, donate it.

So in order to generate publicity, she decided to call a local radio station. Of course, she claims it wasn't to promote the show. It's because they don't have to.

Kate doens't price any of her items in a yard sale. Because she doesn't have time to do it. Which confuses people. I hate making an offer. because clearly everyone things their *junk* is worth more than it actually is.

And to add insult to injury, Kate was on her iPhone most of the sale. Which is rude when you're trying to get people to buy things. She showed virtually no interest in the people.

Mady arrives and gets upset when she find a balleria figurine that Poppy gave to her for sale. Kate dismisses it because it leaves "dustilies" or glitter everywhere. Because Mady was upset, she caved. Well how nice. I treasure the trinkets I have from my Grandma, who's no longer with us. They always make me smile when I see them.

Kate degrades Jon when it is revealed that he forget everyone's lunch. Well, with the loading, unloading, packing everyone up, and getting everything set up, he forgot lunch. Give the guy a break!

We then see that if you want a picture with Kate, you have to make a donation to Pediatric Cancer. I think I'd rather just give without the picture.

What does everyone do at the end of a garage sale? Count money. Kate says to us that she *hates* touching money. She doens't hate receiving it though! Jon, Kate, and Carla make bets on how much they took in and then bicker about who's closer. Maybe Kate can't do math because she doesn't count in low numbers?

SassySarah's Review: I'm glad the family raised $$ for cancer research, but would have been just as happy had they done it a bit differently. And acted less bitchy about it. Since it did involve a donation, no thumbs up or down.
